Tzedakah 101: The Foundations of Jewish Giving
An introductory live session on the philosophy, halacha, and practice of tzedakah. Perfect for anyone beginning their giving journey or looking to deepen their understanding of this central mitzvah.
What You'll Learn in This Session
This live session is designed for anyone beginning their tzedakah journey — or anyone looking to bring fresh depth to a practice they have been doing for years. We will cover the foundational questions: What is tzedakah? Why are we obligated? How much should we give? And what is the spirit behind the law?
Session Outline
Part 1: The Meaning of Tzedakah (25 minutes)
We begin by unpacking the word itself — not charity but justice. What does it mean to understand giving as a legal and ethical obligation rather than a voluntary act of generosity? How does this change the psychology and spirituality of giving?
Part 2: The Halachic Framework (20 minutes)
A practical walk through the halachic structure: maaser kesafim (the 10% baseline), who is obligated, and what counts toward fulfillment. We will look at specific cases and common questions.
Part 3: Building a Practice (10 minutes)
Practical tools for moving from intention to action: calculating your maaser, setting up a giving fund, and making annual decisions.
Q&A (remainder)
