Purim has a specific obligation: gifts to the poor. The Rambam says the joy of giving on Purim must exceed any other celebration.
Purim's Four Mitzvot
Purim is one of the most joyful days in the Jewish calendar, and it comes with four specific mitzvot: reading the Megillah, giving mishloach manot (food gifts to friends), feasting, and — critically — matanot la'evyonim: gifts to the poor.
These four form a coherent whole. The reading connects us to the story and to Jewish memory. The feast fills us with joy. The mishloach manot strengthens our bonds with our people. And the gifts to the poor ensure that the joy of the day is shared — that no one is sitting in hunger while the community celebrates.
